Genuine Bògòlanfini Mudcloth Kufi Hat Handcrafted Mali Black Bone

Made in Mali, produced from authentic African mudcloth. Mud dye has been used for many centuries to pass African culture from generation to generation. Mudcloth is made using ancient and extensive process. Fabric is all hand spun making seven individual cloth sheets in this work. Each strip of cloth is then sewn together. The entire piece of fabric is then dyed in tea made from Bogalon tree found in sub-Saharan Africa. The tea acts as a fixative for mud painted designs that are hand painted using specially prepared mud.

In traditional Malian culture, bògòlanfini is worn by hunters, serving as camouflage, as ritual protection, and as a badge of status. Women are wrapped in bògòlanfini after their initiation into adulthood and immediately after childbirth, as the cloth is believed to have the power to absorb the dangerous forces released under such circumstances.

Approx. 22" in circumference, unisex, fully lined in soft black cotton.
