Originated by African women of Mali's Bamana culture centuries ago, hand-woven and hand-dyed mud cloth or mudcloth or bogolan uses a centuries-old process using numerous applications of various plant juices/teas and mud to hand woven cotton cloth. No two pieces are alike and each pattern and color combination has a meaning. In traditional Malian culture, bògòlanfini is worn by hunters, serving as camouflage, as ritual protection and as a badge of status. Women are wrapped in bògòlanfini after their initiation into adulthood and immediately after childbirth, as the cloth is believed to have the power to absorb the dangerous forces released under such circumstances.

Mud cloth is a moderately durable fabric and can be gently washed by hand using a mild soap with minimal loss or running of dyes. The cloth becomes softer with each washing. Some people just throw them into their washing machines, and there is little loss of color on the gentle cycle. Hang or lay flat to dry. Do not place in the dryer.

A unique, sophisticated accessory to wear as a scarf, sash/belt, or head wrap! Equally at home as a table runner!
